[personal profile] de_nugis asked me "Pick a piece of your art that you are proud of and say a bit about its inspiration or your process for that piece or just why it's one you especially like."

Oh, this is a hard one to answer. I have a number of projects I'm proud of for very different reasons, but I'll go ahead and choose this one, from the 2012 SPN J2 BB.

Aside from one rough sketch of Dean I posted a few months prior, this was my first foray into the SPN fandom as a writer after having been in it for several years as an author. I had even written a story for the previous year's BB (which was my favorite of all my stories ever), so this was a huge shift for me, and I had no idea how it would go.

Anyhow, I was lucky enough to get bellatemple's wonderful Dean-centric fic (go read it!), with all it's lovely mindbendyness and wonderful imagery. In short, I had plenty of material to work with, which made the chapter headers fairly easy to manage. Coming up with a cover concept though? And actually designing the cover? Oy. Graphic design is a little bit different than drawing, to make a vast, vast understatement. So, I put my thinking cap on.

Well, a central theme was Dean's fear for Sam, and I wanted to play with the film idea. I tried drawing the thing in its entirety, and failed horribly. I'm not a good enough draftsperson to pull off the film effect. And lettering has always been my Waterloo. So, I went to Plan B. I drew the pictures of Dean and Young!Sam separately, focusing on each of them as separate pictures that could stand on their own. I drew them on colored paper using various colors of compressed charcoal.

It took a LONG time to get the Dean drawing right, even with a photo reference, as the angle of the face was so odd. There were so, so many false starts on that one.

Then, it was time to give myself a crash course in how to use my graphics software (Sketchbook Pro). I figured out how to use layers, and adjust transparency, etc. I found some stock photos to use for the film, and layered copies of the Sam drawing on top. Then, I figured out how to paint in the burn effects (and was rather pleased at giving Sam a demonic white eye via film-burn). The title lettering ended up being "hand" drawn via tablet as I couldn't find a single font I liked well enough to use for the project. I'm very happy with how it turned out, and am sort of ridiculously pleased with myself for making the crossbar of the first T out of the S in the line above.

To make a long story short, I had a blast with my first foray into SPN artdom, and I haven't looked back since. I've met many wonderful people, and have had a GREAT time!
