December Meme - 12/3
Here is my response for 12/1 for this meme. The prompt is from
cassiopeia7, who asked me "What is your absolute favorite art tool, the one thing you cannot live without?"
This is going to sound so, so silly, but my favorite tool is a mechanical pencil. No, I'm not going to get the sensuous rush I get from working with oils or pastels, but the mechanical pencil is foundational in so much stuff I do. I get a nice, not-too-heavy, consistent line which is key for sketching things out on pastel paper or on canvas. I can get a high level of precision for when I'm doing a drawing that I will later be inking. I don't have to stop to sharpen the damned thing - a few clicks, and I get more lead. I don't even need to have a super fancy-schmancy pencil. Cheapy disposables work just fine for what I mostly use them for.
Plus, I can actually use them for drawing. This picture (technically unfinished) was done entirely with a mechanical pencil.

As a bonus, here are a few other items that are part of my artistic staples: 1/2" angled shader brushes (the more worn out the better, actually), kneaded erasers, Micron pens, tons and tons of cadmium red and Naples yellow oil paint, and artist tape.
