Yuletide Reveal!
Jan. 1st, 2011 07:41 amI did not sign up for Yuletide this year, but I wound up picking up a pinch hit on Dec. 21.
What can I say? I function best under tight deadlines.
Anyhow, I picked up the prompt for
izzy, and ended up writing:
Neverwhere - Neil Gaiman: The Never-Green Tree
Two weeks after returning to London Below, Richard Mayhew must once again cross Night's Bridge.
8,000+ words in 48 hours (including a flurry of online research) followed by an 11th-hour edit pass on Christmas Eve. I don't think I've ever written that much in that short of a time frame and been as happy with a fic as I am with this one. Given that I had little time to canon-check, I may have muffed a detail or two, but so far no one has pointed anything out.
The recipient seemed to be very, very pleased with it as well, which was immensely gratifying. She left a great YT letter that gave me a good idea of what she liked about the book and the characters in the first place, and that had an intriguing prompt that gave me a good sense of direction and still a lot of room to play.
As an unexpected side bonus, the Yuletide mods put up a post asking for prompts from those of us who pinch-hitted but did not sign up for the challenge. So, I wound up gettingfics in addition to writing one!
I got FOUR fics for "How to Train Your Dragon," all on the theme of Stoick and/or Hiccup adjusting to things post-movie (I'll link and comment individually a bit later).
I then got THREE "Princess and the Frog" fics, two with Tiana teaching Lottie how to cook and one where Tiana herself is still learning to cook. These fics all rocked, especially in how all three of them brought in the Tiana-Lottie friendship (which was my favorite thing about the movie).
I also got an absolutely brilliant "Angry Birds" fic. Well, filk. Some evil genius did a rewrite of a very famous WWI poem: In Level Six. Only 97 words, but I was howling with laughter throughout. "In Level Six, the balloons blow..."
