Lifted from [personal profile] cofax7:

Writers, what do you do in every fandom?

Given that I've written a large number of one-shots in a variety of fandoms, I can't honestly say that the following list applies to every fandom. But still, as I think about it, there are some definite trends in the kinds of tropes I like to dive into.

1. Spotlighting minor characters: I like to play with characters who maybe don't get the spotlight as much as some others. My favorite SPN fics all focus on secondary or even one-shot characters--John, Pastor Jim, Ellen. The co-write I'm working on with [personal profile] incandescens and [personal profile] liralen spotlights a number of second-tier characters from a large canon cast. One of my favorite CLAMPverse fics is about Lady Sumeragi of all people. It is interesting (to me) to see who these people are (what they want, what they love, what they fear) when they're not serving as plot-movers or foils. A large number of my one-or-two shot forays into some fandoms have ended up focusing on people other than the leads.

2. Digging into the world's foundations: My first Sailor Moon fic was based on trying to make sense of some seriously inconsistent worldbuilding in that verse. Apocrypha was largely grounded in trying to make sense of John Winchester's (in)actions in SPN Season 1, not just character-wise, but in the context of what we later learned about Lucifer, the angels, etc. Summer Fields isn't expressly about worldbuilding, but it plays heavily into how relationships have shifted given that one chunk of the cast ages at a drastically different rate than the rest.

3. Multi-character conversations: I often end up with scenes where lots and lots of people are talking to, around, and over each other with lots of interruptions and tangents.

4. Casual hook-ups: For someone who primarily writes Bob (gen w/ background shipping), I tend to provide characters a good deal of opportunity for no-strings-attached nookie.

Did I miss anything obvious?
