First of all, thanks for the wonderful support I got on my last post. Things have been roller-coastery for several weeks now, and it is very reassuring to know that y'all are there. I'm feeling a bit wiped at the moment, but largely better.

Anyhow, because things have been roller-coastery, and because there's some upheaval (mostly positive) on the horizon at work, I'm going to keep the New Year's Resolution thing very, very simple. I don't need more things to stress about right now.

So, here are the resolutions:

1. Read more. I've been very spotty in my reading the past few years, and I miss it. I've been doing more internet browsing than reading, and I think I'm suffering from it intellectually and creatively. Right now I'm in the middle of Skullduggery Pleasant and enjoying it very much. I may or may not keep a running list of what I read. We'll see.

2. Make health (physical and mental) a priority. This means being more attentive to what I eat, as it has a definite impact on how I feel and how my brain functions. It also means being diligent about sleep, which may mean curtailing computer and TV time before bed. I'm also going to try to be more attentive as to what precedes a fibro flareup (that's how I found out that I need my sleep and that I need to stay away from wheat as much as possible). Obviously, the workouts will continue.

3. Deliberately make and take the time to work on my original fiction. One issue I have always had--and with more than just writing--is that I do a lot of thinking about things, but tend to get paralyzed when it comes to starting them. For more on this, see the quote at the end of this post. Fortunately, I've got an accountability buddy on this, which will be a huge help (waves at [personal profile] aishuu).

4. Stay off the goddamn iPhone while at work.

Overall, the biggest thing for me is to keep this quote by Neil Gaiman very much in mind:

“I hope that in this year to come, you make mistakes.

Because if you are making mistakes, then you are making new things, trying new things, learning, living, pushing yourself, changing yourself, changing your world. You’re doing things you’ve never done before, and more importantly, you’re Doing Something.

So that’s my wish for you, and all of us, and my wish for myself. Make New Mistakes. Make glorious, amazing mistakes. Make mistakes nobody’s ever made before. Don’t freeze, don’t stop, don’t worry that it isn’t good enough, or it isn’t perfect, whatever it is: art, or love, or work or family or life.

Whatever it is you’re scared of doing, Do it.

Make your mistakes, next year and forever.”
