And by random, I mean random. I may or may not have a longer post about Ms Adler later on, but most of what I would have to say would echo this.

Anyhow, randomness ahoy...

One of my favorite moments in this was when John and Sherlock were in Buckingham Palace and being such utter brats.

Another favorite moment--John and Sherlock both yelling at Mycroft at the same time in defense of Mrs. Hudson. Relatedly, I also wibbled very much when Sherlock bypassed analysis in favor of "how do I best kill this SOB" when Mrs. Hudson is in danger. In terms of narrative kinks, found family gets me every time. Also, given the few bits and bobs we've heard about Sherlock's family life (esp. mother), that puts Mrs. Hudson in an interesting new light for me.

Speaking of Mrs. Hudson, her quickness of mind when about to be taken hostage kindled a brand new headcanon for me. We know from what happened to her husband that Mrs. H likely lived in Florida for a while. In my own little version of the Sherlockverse, Mrs. Hudson and Madeline Westen met during that time and are good friends. (Also, I would desperately love to see a Sherlock/Lie to Me crossover. Sherlock meeting Cal would be... interesting. Yes, interesting.)

Going back to narrative kinks, I may have watched the bit where Sherlock hits John and John retaliates threefold a few times. Especially given what Irene hinted about him holding back. Um... Yeah, I kind of have a thing for BAMF!John, and have ever since the first episode. Also, I was intrigued to get some background as to which regiment John was in, especially since that particular regiment hasn't been referred to in that way since the late 1960s. I don't recall quite enough of the ACD canon to know for sure, but I assume that's a nod to canon.

Speaking of which, deerstalker! Hee! I loved that, along with nod to classic story titles--I nearly lost it at "The Geek Interpreter."

The moment that did have me lose it long enough to have to pause the video was Sherlock's response to the little girls' question about Heaven. His response to "Are we here to see the Queen?" was the occasion for another pause.

Mycroft's confronting Sherlock on the plane full of dead bodies--guh. As brothers, they fascinate me just as much as the Winchesters, but for entirely different reasons.

The one thing I really didn't enjoy was seeing how poor Molly was treated--again. Yes, Sherlock apologized and apologized sincerely, but I hate the way she is continually humiliated on the show, and how that humiliation and her futile crush on Sherlock seem (to me) to be played for humor. I feel that outrage over that kind of got lost in some of the blowback about Irene Adler. For god's sake, Moffat, let Molly have a moment when she's not being the butt-monkey of the show, okay?

A few thoughts regarding shipping, since it's kind of hard to talk about Sherlock without talking about that, especially after this episode. I don't particularly slash John/Sherlock, but I don't not slash it either, if that makes sense. (TBH, I'm in a phase right now where I much prefer het to slash and even gen, but that's cyclical and will no doubt swing around again at some point). In any case, Sherlock reads to me now more than ever as a- or demisexual, but I could definitely see his fascination with Irene being expressed sexually (same goes for Moriarty).

That said, I do think Sherlock has a strong emotional attachment to John--loves him, in fact. Whether or not he's aware of that is the question of the hour. I think the same is very true for John. At the moment, however, Sherlock doesn't seem very interested in sex and John identifies as straight. Irene cut right to the heart of the matter when she implied their sexuality (straight, gay or ace) didn't mean that they weren't intimately involved.

In one way, that's very intriguing to me, but at the same time I'm side-eyeing it because of the skeeviness of the whole WNGWJLEO trope. Still, the whole notion of a triangle with (apparently) incompatible sexualities has got me thinking quite a bit. From a ficcing standpoint, the easiest solution would be for John to admit (to himself, first) that he is bisexual rather than straigh, and Sherlock to turn out to be demisexual--and honestly, I do think that Sherlock facing up to what he feels for John could be just as if not more traumatic than John re-evaluating his own sexuality. But if everyone's sexuality is what he or she claims it to be, what then?

You are very thinky, productively so for me, so thank you. I definitely need to rewatch, since I think I dozed through parts on first watch. From all the eps and parts of this one I *have* seen, I agree with your surmises and/or conclusions, now that you mention it.

And also, you have given me food for thought for *days*--I had a minor brain-go-splodey contemplating a Sherlock-Lightman meeting. As I said, thinky.
