Resurfacing
Jan. 28th, 2012 01:20 pmI recently realized that I've been more hermity of late than I might usually be. Things are not as rough as they were back in December, which is damned good as I've had some other crap I've had to deal with (work, worry about aging parents).
Anyhow, even though things have been going better in terms of mood, etc., I haven't had much brain space to deal with much of anything outside of work and keeping myself healthy. Even the housework has suffered, and that's usually not a good sign. In a few minutes, I'll be getting myself up and about and trying to get things to what I consider a decent state.
I've been reading a lot more of late, which has been good. I have been binging on Sherlock fic (it's the one fandom where I find I like some of the more out-there AUs - not sure why that is) for the past few weeks in the wake of the new season, but I've also been reading more novels than I have in a while.
Birthmarked is a good dystopian YA story with some strong world-building and a delightful amount of moral grayness (the crappy things that the society does make sense, even though they're appalling). I did find the romance angle a bit tacked on, to be honest, but I liked both leads quite a bit, even though I didn't give a shit about the will-they-or-won't-they. The sequel is out, but it the description has me a bit eye-rolly. I'll read it, but not just right away.
I also finally read the newest Terry Pratchett. Snuff may not be his best work (there was a chunk of it that felt a bit too much one-damned-thing-after-the other), but it was so damned good to see Vimes again that I didn't mind. I also re-read Monstrous Regiment, and found it was just as good as I remembered.
For a change of pace, I've started up House of Leaves, and am enjoying it so far. It's a bit of a challenge, which I think I need right now.
Writing is also going well, and I'm finally writing some original stuff--mostly feeling out character and voice at the moment. I've also got my two ongoing fic projects and also have some stuff rattling around my mind for a Sherlock/Lie to Me crossover.
Work is getting interesting in a good way. I'm working my way into a more official project management role, with the possibility of promotion very much on the horizon. Possibly as early as this summer, if I'm reading things right. If the promotion goes through, I would be given six weeks to do nothing but study for my Series 7 exam (financial industry regulations, yay). Is it wrong that I think that sounds like fun?
