Most recent art project - all done!

I just finished my first actual oil painting. It was quite a change from my usual pen-and-ink and/or pastel, and I'm very happy with how the final product turned out.

I did this from a photo my BFF took while we were on vacation up on Martha's Vineyard. I did a few alterations to the photo (removing some buckets and some ropes that looked like they were placed there by Escher).

If you want to see the start-to-finish on this thing, I put a selection of in-process photos behind the cut.

Initial sketch and some color tests

Color laydown begins (I will be so sick of mixing gray by the time this is over...)

IMG_0589

Adding colors that aren't gray.

IMG_0593

Shading, a little bit of detail...

IMG_0597

Adding a little detail in the background and practicing major task avoidance on all those ropes.

IMG_0599

Got rid of the fishing net in the upper left corner and started adding volume/shaping to those ropes. (If I ever claim a BB fic featuring shibari, I am golden.)

IMG_0611

Did the shingle detail in the back, continued to sharpen things in the front.

I was positive I had replied to this post. I love what you've done here. I don't pretend to understand it, but I'm not an artist, and certainly not a painter.

I will say the scene draws me in, looks inviting, comfortable, welcoming. I know that's me reading in, but I really like it.
